  • Mr. Proudhon has a strange misfortune of being misunderstood in Europe. In France, he has the right to be a bad economist, as he is considered a talented German philosopher; On the other hand, in Germany, he is allowed to be a bad philosopher, as he is considered one of the most powerful French economists. In our dual capacity as Germans and economists, we feel obliged to protest this double delusion. The Poverty of Philosophy, written in the winter of 1846-1847 in response to the work The Philosophy of Poverty by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, one of the founders of anarchism, is one of Karl Marx's first systematic works in the field of economics. This book, which makes many references in the first volume of Capital published in 1867, also includes criticisms of German philosophy. The first German translation of The Poverty of Philosophy, the first edition of which was published in French in 1847, was published in 1885, after the death of its author. Friedrich Engels, who edited this edition, reviewed the translation, made corrections based on notes from Marx, added footnotes, wrote a foreword, and enriched the book with some additional texts. In 1891, when asked for permission to publish the Spanish translation of the book, Engels replied: We certainly happily approve of this attempt.
