- Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852): He was born in Ukraine into a middle-class landowning family. Village life and Kazakh traditions, which influenced his childhood, were reflected in his works, and he wrote stories embroidered with elements of Ukrainian folk culture. He pioneered an important innovation in Russian literature with his sense of humor, realistic attitude and lively expression. This innovation was shaped by his thoughts on pessimism in the face of life and the evil of the world, as well as humor in Evening Meetings on a Farm Near Dikanka, Petersburg Stories and Mirgorod Stories. In his play Inspector, he brutally ridiculed corrupt bureaucrats. With his novel Dead Souls, Gogol presented the criticism of social order and individuals in 19th century Russia as a unique masterpiece. Show more
