Historical Editorial Review
**** "Glory Over Everything" serves as a powerful sequel to "The Kitchen House," capturing readers with its compelling narrative and rich characters. This novel delves into the dark and painful realities surrounding slavery, while also exploring themes of resilience, friendship, and personal growth. Readers find themselves deeply drawn into the story as it offers an honest portrayal of the horrors wrought upon the enslaved, providing both moments of heartbreak and uplift. While the story's main character, Jamie Pyke Burton, elicited mixed responses for his perceived weakness, other characters such as Pan and Robert garnered admiration for their strength and humanity. The emotional weight of the narrative, especially the difficult but necessary depictions of mistreatment, can be challenging but also highlights the perseverance of those who fought for their dignity and freedom. The pacing of the novel is noted to fluctuate, with the first half gradually building character backgrounds, while the second half ignites a fierce urgency that keeps readers engrossed. Its intricate storytelling and well-developed characters not only propel the plot but also seem to resonate emotionally with readers, offering a blend of both disheartening and hopeful moments. Although some criticisms of the novel arise, such as the execution of certain character arcs, the overall reception remains overwhelmingly positive, with many readers recommending it as a must-read, whether as a standalone or a follow-up to its predecessor. Fans of historical fiction, especially those interested in narratives centered around slavery, are likely to find "Glory Over Everything" a worthy addition to their library, with poignant lessons about growth and humanity. **
